Isla and Werners South Africa wedding was a very very special wedding for me. Her brother is a good friend from college and I watched Isla “grow up” even though she is only a few years younger than me. The Morton family holds a very special place in my heart and are some of the most kind and considerate people I know. They are a family filled with wanderlust always traveling, exploring the Caribbean on their catamaran so it was no surprise when Isla told me they would be doing a destination wedding half way around the world.
The two of them met while working on yachts in Ft. Lauderdale. Werner is originally from South Africa and one of the reasons why they decided to do their wedding there. Isla told me that the second she stepped foot in South Africa she fell in love with it. The decision to get married there was easy.
South Africa is a place that has always been on my bucket list but not a place I ever thought I would be lucky enough to go to. I didn’t even hesitate to say yes when Isla and Werner asked me to photograph their wedding.
When planning a destination wedding a lot of times you don’t expect a whole lot of your guests to show up especially when you are having a wedding across the world. Isla and Werner were in for a big surprise because almost 80 guests showed up for them. What amazing friends and family they have! The wedding was held at a beautiful winery called Blue Gum Estates in Hermanus, South Africa. It is a quaint little town on the coast. You can spend your morning having epic eggs benedict (which is my favorite breakfast to eat there) while watching the whales breach offshore and then spend your afternoon drinking wine or snuggling some elephants. South Africa’s beauty is hard to explain, you definitely feel like you are close to the heartbeat of the world.
The wedding day was as perfect as any wedding day could be. Not a cloud in the sky, perfect temperatures and a calm that is indescribable. I got to hang out with a lot of Werners family a few days before the wedding and instantly loved them. They were so happy about the wedding and couldn’t wait to celebrate Isla and Werner.
This wedding was definitely one for the books and not one that I will forget for a long time.
